Blacksmithing workshop at Newbury Show

Blacksmithing workshop at Newbury Show

On Sunday 21st September, a group of Year 11 GCSE D&T students and Year 13 A-level Product Design students, had the opportunity to take part in a blacksmithing workshop at Newbury Show.

The students were invited by professional blacksmith, Nick Peppitt from Hollington Forge, to create a steel flower at the show in the Blacksmiths and Farriers marquee.

Students worked alongside expert blacksmiths who guided them through creating the pieces, which included learning about how to heat and form metal using a forge and join metals to construct a 3D piece. Students were given pre-cut pieces of flat sheet steel shapes and were challenged to experiment with forming these into a flower. A number of visitors to the show gathered at the marquee to watch the students as they worked.

All of the students thoroughly enjoyed this experience and were able to learn about using metal materials and manufacturing techniques, which will benefit their GCSE and A-level studies. It was also great for students to find out more about what blacksmiths and farriers do in their day to day work.

Thank you to Nick and his team at Hollington Forge for the experience and working with our students to help create these excellent pieces!
